Day 8 of Cornish x Rocks (6-18-2010)

Day 7 of Cornish x Rocks (6-17-2010)

Day 6 of Cornish x Rocks (6-16-2010)

Sorry we missed a couple of days. I would also like to hear a comment on the birds eating dead bugs. Is this a bad idea? Could it have negative health effects on the chickens? Thanks for any thoughts.

Day of Arrival

On June 11, 2010 our We ordered 25 from Purely Poultry and got 27. Upon opening the box we were happy to see that they were all alive and well. As is to be expected after spending two days in the mail the were all cold, thirsty and hungry, in that order. After they spent a while warming under the heat lamp there next priority was water then food. Although they were all alive one seemed weak and it expectantly died with a few hours, I suppose he was just a runt. It also took a little bit of trial and error to get the heat lamp just right, something that should have been better sorted out before they arrived. We are feeding them 22% "Game Developer", which I mainly chose for the protein level, our local coop's selection is not great.

The Beginning

It all started about nine months ago when i first started to do a little research on the current food system and industrial agriculture on a whole. As those of you who have done any research of your own could imagine what I discovered, the endless stories of concentration camp chickens, cattle that are meant to eat grass being fed corn and chicken litter, milk that has had all the healthy amino acids and enzymes burned out and numerous other atrocities. Armed with this new found knowledge me and my similarly minded brother set to make a change and do something. Now living in the suburbs we do not have enough room for a cow, although we probably have enough room for a goat or lamb but that just wouldn't fly with the parents. So we made the decision to go with chickens, we are starting off with 25 Cornish x Rocks, and will shortly get some egg layers. Our first birds were hatched on June 9th, 2010 and arrived on the 11th we have kept video records since they arrived and plan to do two updates a day all the way through the cooking and eating of our first bird. Comments and suggestions are always welcome. Stay tuned.
